For a compact pickup, Maverick has impressive towing capability. Regardless of your chosen engine, the Maverick has a 2,000-pound towing capacity. However, by opting for the 4K Tow Package and AWD, you unlock the Maverick's maximum towing capacity of 4,000 pounds. Every model has a respectable 1,500-pound payload capacity.
The 4K Tow Package is a must-have to achieve maximum towing capacity. The package includes a seven-wire harness with a four- or seven-pin connector. You also get a factory-installed hitch receiver with a 400-pound tongue rating.
Ford adds an auxiliary auto transmission oil cooler with this package to aid the Maverick's towing capability, plus an upgraded radiator. A trailer brake controller comes with the package and helps improve towing capacity, handling, and control.
The Maverick drivetrain has five standard drive modes. Normal mode works great for everyday driving around town. Eco mode delivers maximum efficiency on your Dallas-Fort Worth commute, and Sport mode dials in your throttle and suspension for a more exciting driving experience.
Slippery mode improves traction when the rain or occasional snow falls. The Tow/Haul mode reduces gear hunting and improves power delivery for smoother towing.

Maverick has only one competitor in the compact pickup truck segment, the Hyundai Santa Cruz. Pricing for the Maverick starts at $23,815 MSRP for the XL trim, which tows 2,000 pounds as is.
Hyundai sells its base model, the Santa Cruz SE, at $26,650 MSRP and claims it can tow 3,500 pounds. A closer look reveals you need to add AWD and the trailer brake controller to achieve that rating.
When you add the AWD and trailer brake controller to the Maverick, you get 4,000 pounds of towing capacity. The Maverick costs less and delivers more than the Santa Cruz, making it an excellent option for light-duty work and first-time truck buyers.
The Ford Ranger slots in the midsize pickup segment. Comparing the Maverick with its big brother, the Ranger is bigger and stronger. The Ranger's base model XL's 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine produces 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque at an approachable $32,670 MSRP.
Top-tier models have a 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine capable of 315 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Or you can opt for Ford's 3.0-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine. This powertrain pumps out 405 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. Of course, that power gives you a 7,500-pound towing capacity.
The Ranger Raptor exclusively uses the V-6 engine, but its towing capacity drops to 5,510 pounds. The more rugged Raptor has heavier equipment, which lowers how much it can tow, but that rugged gear makes it an off-road beast capable of handling the harshest terrain.
