Ford F-150 Lightning Trim LevelsYou can choose from four trims in the 2023 F-150 Lightning's lineup: Pro, XLT, Lariat, and Platinum. The bottom three trims are equipped with a 98 kWh battery pack that's good for 240 miles of driving when fully charged. The larger battery pack is available in the two midrange trims and comes standard with the range-topping Platinum trim. It's a 131 kWh battery pack with a longer driving range than the standard battery pack.
The base Pro trim features vinyl upholstery in the cabin and a 12-inch infotainment screen up front. It rides on all-terrain tires and boasts skid plates to cope with off-roading. Standard features include a class IV trailer hitch and trailer sway control. You can add extra towing features, such as a trailer brake and hitch guidance, with the Tow Technology package.
The XLT trim adds cloth upholstery and a power-adjustable seat for the driver. You also get in-bed lighting and a work surface in the cabin. The Lariat adds leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and a power-adjustable passenger's seat. You also gain a larger 15.5-inch infotainment screen and a premium eight-speaker stereo. Finally, the range-topping Platinum trim boasts multicontour front seats, an 18-speaker sound system, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. It rides on 22-inch wheels and gains all of Ford's towing assistance tech.
The base F-150 Lightning has more than enough infotainment tech to satisfy most people's needs. In addition to the 12-inch screen and six-speaker stereo that come standard, you get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a navigation system. The voice recognition feature allows you to control many basic settings verbally so you don't have to take your eyes off the road.
Optional upgrades include the larger 15.5-inch infotainment screen and two premium stereos. You can also add wireless device charging, satellite radio, and HD radio. Some of these options are only available with specific trims.
The F-150 Lightning achieves between 66 and 70 MPGe in combined highway-city driving. With the standard battery pack, you can expect a driving range of 240 miles. The XLT and Lariat are the best trims if you want maximum range. With the larger battery pack, they can achieve 320 miles. The top-ranked Platinum trim manages 300 miles with the larger battery pack, which comes standard. If you're charging your battery on a level 2 charger, it can take between 10 and 20 hours depending on the size of battery pack your Lightning has.
Unlike many trucks, the F-150 Lightning is only available with one cargo bed and cab configuration, but it's a very good one. The cargo bed measures 5 feet 6 inches in length, giving you ample space for most items. Up front, you can seat five people in the cab. Both rows are suitable for adult passengers, with rear-row passengers enjoying close to 44 inches of legroom in the cavernous seats. The cargo bed has a maximum cargo capacity of 52.8 cubic feet and can haul up to 2,235 pounds. You'll find some additional cargo storage space in the frunk, which is located where the internal combustion engine normally is and offers about 14 cubic feet of space.
The F-150 Lightning is just over 19 feet long. Depending on the trim you choose, you can ride on different wheel sizes, including 20-inch and 22-inch wheels. Four-wheel drive comes standard, allowing you to tackle any surface with confidence. All F-150s are fitted with basic off-roading gear, including a locking rear differential and skid plates. The truck has 8.4 inches of ground clearance, so you should be able to handle a trail or two.
You'll find a broad selection of safety features in the F-150 Lightning's base setup. Forward collision warning alerts you to vehicles up ahead that could present a hazard. If you fail to respond in time, automatic emergency braking can bring your truck to a stop. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert let you know about motorists approaching you from angles that you can't easily see. The rear parking sensors help you navigate in and out of tight parking spots, while lane-keep assist helps you to stay on the right track when you're on the highway.
One of the headline optional upgrades is Blue Cruise, a semi-automatic highway driving mode that can take care of steering, braking, and acceleration. Other options include Stop & Go adaptive cruise control, front parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition. The surround-view parking camera can give you an aerial view of your truck to make parking a whole lot easier.
